Eco Solve: Lighting Sri Lanka’s Future, the Sustainable Way by Practicing Green Supply Chain Management
May 22, 2025Ramboda Tunnel: A Landmark Illuminated with Innovation – Eco Solve’s LED Lighting Solution

Nestled amidst the breathtaking hills of Sri Lanka, Ramboda Tunnel stands as a national engineering marvel. Located on the A5 Road, this two-way tunnel spans 225 meters in length and 7 meters in width, making it the longest tunnel in Sri Lanka. Built with the support of Japanese funds, the Ramboda Tunnel is not only a symbol of infrastructure development but is also proudly depicted on the Sri Lankan Rs. 1,000 currency note.
However, for years, the tunnel posed a critical visibility challenge for motorists. Despite attempts by various lighting solution, a safety-focused, energy-efficient, and scientifically sound solution had not been achieved—until now.
The Visual Safety Challenge
One of the key issues with the Ramboda Tunnel was the sudden shift in brightness. Drivers traveling from bright daylight into the darker tunnel often reported feeling momentarily blinded, resulting in multiple traffic incidents. Scientifically, this is known as the “dark adaptation” effect, where the human eye struggles to adjust quickly from a brightly lit environment to a darker one.
Conversely, when exiting the tunnel, drivers face “light adaptation”, which causes temporary visual discomfort as the eyes re-adjust to bright surroundings. With a tunnel transit time of just 30 seconds, the human eye does not have enough time to fully adapt in either direction, increasing the risk of accidents.
Eco Solve’s Research-Backed LED Lighting Solution
Taking up this challenge, the Eco Solve research and development team engineered a breakthrough LED Lighting Solution designed specifically for Ramboda Tunnel. We developed a dynamic lighting gradient system:
-
Tunnel Entry: Bright lighting that matches the exterior light levels to eliminate sudden contrast.
-
Middle Section: Light levels are gradually dimmed to mimic natural adaptation.
-
Tunnel Exit: Brightness is progressively increased to match outside light, easing re-entry into daylight.
This ensures a seamless visual transition for drivers, minimizing both dark and light adaptation lag. This thoughtful approach reflects our deep understanding of both optical science and road safety engineering.
Smart, Sustainable & Safe Lighting
Our solution wasn’t just effective—it was eco-conscious and future-proof:
✅ Smart Light Control System – Tunnel lights adjust based on real-time outdoor lighting conditions.
✅ General, Emergency & Decorative Lights – Separate circuits ensure functionality and visual harmony.
✅ Energy-Efficient & Durable LEDs – Consuming up to 30% less energy with near-zero maintenance.
✅ Backup Power Systems – Guaranteed uninterrupted lighting, even during outages.
✅ Minimal Environmental Impact – All installations were made with the natural beauty of Ramboda in mind.
A First-of-its-Kind in Sri Lanka
The Ramboda Tunnel lighting project by Eco Solve is a pioneering example of blending innovation with infrastructure. By addressing a real-world safety problem using science, research, and smart lighting, we’ve redefined how LED lighting solutions can contribute to safer roads and sustainable practices in Sri Lanka.
